(adj.) relying on chance or an uncontrolled element
in the details of life or in the creation of art.
Making Aleatory Tee has been quite the journey. It might look polished and simplistic, but like most things it has a story underneath on how it became what it is today. This tee came to life when the label was starting up and based in Brisbane, Australia and the print was drawn on by hand directly on the first sample. It´s something exhilarating only having one try to get it right. No going back. I often feel it is in situations like that I do my best work, when the time spent thinking, re-evaluating and changing what you do is very limited. You act on instinct, get your one chance and when it´s finished, that´s it. So I drew it, I finished it, and that was it. The print was made digital through photography and I was lucky to find Nathan, a screen printer with a studio in his garage right outside of Brisbane.
It´s nice using locals when you need resources outside your own. Some known that this label is run by the "I can do it myself"-mentality, but let´s face it nobody is able to do everything and anything.
This tee, along with the other styles from NO.01 was produced small-scale at a local factory also right outside of Brisbane. I went there to visit them on multiple occasions, to plan, discuss and follow up. It´s nice to be so close to the process that you can swing by and talk to people face to face instead of always communicating through screens.
We were welcome to take som pictures around the factory ground, which wasn´t that large, and these two ladies were more than happy to participate. So much so that I was thrown in there as well. We almost got a photo of one of them applying lipstick in this little mirror behind the sewing machine. That would have made a cool photo!
Isn´t it funny to think about all these common, yet magical, small moment that is a part of every item of clothing? Moments that the end-consumer will never know about. That is also part of why we have these sit-downs with each style, so you will know where they all come from and how they became what you can purchase right here.
Aleatory Tee was made in Australia, first by me, my sewing machine and my pens, then by Nathan in his garage, then by these ladies at the little factory right out side of Brisbane.
